Two women Naxalites were killed on Sunday in a gun battle with security forces in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district, police said.

The gunfight took place in a forest near Japeli village around 6 am when security forces were on an anti-Naxalitew operation, Bijapur Superintendent of Police Kamlochan Kashyap said.

Acting on a tip, the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and the 222nd Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) launched the operation on Saturday night towards Japeli, Durda and Mosla villages, he said.

On Sunday morning, the team came face-to-face with two groups of armed Maoists, leading to the gun battle, he said.

After the exchange of fire ended, the bodies of two female Naxalite cadres were recovered from the spot along with a 12-bore gun, a 9 mm pistol, cordex wire, explosives materials and other Maoist items.
