Following the frequent fire incidents at the Bhalswa Dairy landfill site, the residents living in Shardanand Colony, Rajiv Nagar and the Bhalswa JJ cluster have filed a written complaint with Delhi Police against the North MCD (NMC).
After struggling for four days, the firefighters managed to douse the fire on Friday. The blaze had started on April 26 and due to continuous burning the residents of the area complained of sore throat, itchy eyes and even breathing problems due to the smoke. In the complaint, the residents demanded legal action against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NMC Mayor Iqbal Singh, Deputy Mayor Archana Dilip Singh, Municipal Councillor of the area, Vijay Bhagat and others officials.
“Half of Delhi’s garbage is dumped at the Bhalswa landfill site, which comes under the NMC. For the last four days there has been a fire there and heavy amounts of smoke, due to which residents fear for their lives as they are not able to breathe properly. Several people even had to rush to the hospital,” stated the residents in their complaint.
The residents alleged that frequent fires at the landfill are due to negligence and corruption. “The garbage which has reached the heights of a mountain has fallen several times and the NMC is responsible for this,” the residents said.
