Receiving a video call from an unidentified number has cost a Bhubaneswar BSNL engineer Rs 25 lakh. The victim has lodged a complaint in this connection at the Cyber police station while further investigation was on.
As per the victim’s complaint, he recently received a video call on WhatsApp. The caller identified himself as Vikram Rathore of the CBI.
Later, he took a screenshot of the video call and morphed it in order to make it appear as a video call with participants in a nude state. He then sent the edited screenshot to the victim and started blackmailing him.
The engineer transferred around Rs 25 lakh to the bank account of the accused in three installments within a week in a bid to avoid humiliation.
Police have frozen the bank account of the accused while efforts were on to retrieve the lost amount, the victim said.
