A seven-member team of the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) on Saturday visited Mahul and its surrounding village in Azamgarh where spurious liquor had taken the lives of a dozen men while several persons fell sick or lost eyesight after consuming the hooch.
A CPI (ML) spokesman said a dozen men had died after consuming the spurious liquor and gave details of nine of the deceased.
“Also, in the incident seven persons lost their eyesight,” he said, adding that the party had demanded a high-level inquiry of the hooch tragedy.
He said the CPI (ML) team comprising of Vinod Singh, Sudarshan Ram, Harishchandra, Nirankar Rajbhar, Shivam Giri, Praveen Vishwakarma and Krishna Giri visited Mahul, Dakhingaon, Rasoolpur and Imamgarh villages affected by the liquor tragedy.
In its report, the delegation stated they were told by the villagers that the incident took place due to negligence of the local administration which has a nexus with the liquor businessman accused of selling spurious liquor.
“The administration’s officials did not conduct checking and took samples from the state government-run liquor shops and this finally led to the incident on February 20,” the delegation said in its observation.
The party demanded strict action against the culprits in the case and compensation to the families of the deceased and those who fell sick due to consumption of spurious liquor. The party also demanded an effective check on the sale of illicit/spurious liquor.
