Two accused persons were on Tuesday given the death penalty by the Jagatsinghpur POCSO Court for raping and murdering an eight-year-old girl of Tirtol in the district. The court also imposed upon both a fine of Rs 50,000 each.
Fast Track Court Judge Ajaya Kumar Mohanty, who heads the POCSO Court, awarded the capital punishment to SK Asif and SK Akil, both from Krishnanandapur under Tirtol block while terming their act as “heinous and rarest of the rare”.
The court acquitted another two accused due to lack of evidences of the charges against them.
The minor girl had been raped and murdered in the year 2014. The miscreants had lured her giving chocolate when she was returning from school, taken her to a deserted location near the village, raped her and then strangled her to death.
The girl’s family had lodged an FIR in the Tirtol police station. After a probe, cops arrested four persons and charge-sheeted them under Sections 302, 376 and 34 IPC.
After examining 27 witnesses and evidences supplied by the prosecution, the court announced its verdict. The court rejected leniency to the accused sought by their lawyers.
