The Bharatiya Janata Party has announced its six candidates for the Rajya Sabha biennial elections from Uttar Pradesh.
As per its strength in the UP assembly the BJP can send eight candidates to the Rajya Sabha from the state and two more candidates are likely to be announced soon.
The last date of filing nomination papers is May 31.
The BJP candidates are Surendra Nagar, Sangita Yadav, Radha Mohan Agarwal, Lakshmi Kant Bajpai, Darshan Singh and Baburam Nishad.
Lakshmi Kant Bajpai, a native of Meerut, is a former state president of BJP, four-term MLA and former minister. He was the BJP state president in 2014 and the BJP had won 72 Lok Sabha seats from UP. He had lost the 2017 assembly election from Meerut.
Surendra Nagar, a prominent leader from Gujjar community, is a sitting member of Rajya Sabha. Sangita Yadav was elected to the assembly in 2017 from Chauri Chaura assembly seat in Gorakhpur. She was denied ticket in 2022 assembly polls as her seat was given to NISHAD Party, an ally of the BJP.
Radha Mohan Agarwal is a four-term MLA from Gorakhpur city assembly seat. He had vacated his seat for Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for the 2022 assembly polls.
Darshan Singh is a prominent women’s leader from Varanasi and former state president of BJP Mahila Morcha. Babu Ram Nishad is a young BJP leader from Hamirpur district in Bundelkhand region. He was appointed Chairman of UP Backward Classes Welfare Corporation.
