Balangir farmers hold rail roko in 3 stations

Friday, 30 September 2022 | SUDHIR MISHRA | BALANGIR

Hundreds of aggrieved farmers under the Balangir Zilla Krushak Mahasangha staged a rail roko in Balangir, Titilagarh and Harishankar road (Lathore) railway stations on Monday demanding immediate payment of crop insurance compensation.

Farmers in 85 panchayats of the district have insured their crop since 2021by paying premiums but are yet to get compensation sum after crop loss, they alleged.

In Balangir, the agitators were led by vice president of Mahasangha Chagala Parischha. They squatted at the Balangir railway station which affected the railway traffic.

“We demand immediate release of payment in respect of crop insurance to the farmers, failing which we would continue our rail roko for an indefinite period,” warned Parischha speaking to mediapersons here.

In Titilagarh, the farmers were led by Madhusudan Kheti and in Harishankar Road (Lathore), the farmers were led by Mahasangha president Jati Pradhan.

There was heavy deployment of police in the railway stations. Incidentally, the Railways had cancelled movement of some trains due to safety-related modernisation work in Sambalpur Division.

The stir was called off following assurance was given by the district administration to release the money in seven days.
