The Chhattisgarh Police on Tuesday arrested two persons and seized silver slabs and ornaments weighing 243.600 kg valued at Rs 1.76 crores and Rs 5.78 lakh in cash in Chhattisgarh’s Mahasamund district.
Mahasamund Superintendent of Police Prafull Kumar Thakur told The Pioneer that the arrested men were Gaurav Shalya (22) and car driver Sanjay Khan (41), both residents of Uttar Pradesh.
During routine checking, police intercepted a car at the Chhattisgarh-Odisha checkpost in the Singhora police station limits and found the silver slabs, ornaments and cash inside a trunk in a separate chamber.
The accused said they were returning from Odisha after selling some jewellery which they had brought from Uttar Pradesh. But they failed to produce any documents to back their case.
Police seized 69 silver slabs of different sizes weighing valued at Rs 1,70,45,000, silver ornaments (ankle and bracelet) weighing 8 kg and valued at Rs 5,60,000, cash and the car, Thakur said.
