Smugglers are increasingly using long-distance trains to send narcotics out of the State. In a glaring example, police on Monday night thwarted an effort at the Bhubaneswar railway station to smuggle the contraband to Gujarat.
A joint team of Crime Branch and Railway Protection Force (RPF) detained two transgenders for allegedly carrying around 15 kg of ganja in their luggage and arrested them.
“We had information that some persons carrying the contraband from Beguniapada in Ganjam district were planning to board the Gandhidham Express to Surat. Acting on the input, we searched the train but found nothing,” an official said. “Later, we spotted the two accused sitting at the platform and found the ganja by frisking them. The estimated price of the ganja was Rs 1.5 lakh. The police have booked the duo under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and launched an investigation into the case.
