Rare feat for Tata Motors Hospital’s Ophthalmologist

Sunday, 31 January 2021 | PNS | Jamshedpur

Dr Rajen Verma, chief consultant and HOD Ophthalmology, Tata Motors Hospital (TML), Jamshedpur has achieved a rate feat by operating more than 800 cases, most of them being for cataract, phaco with IOL implants. Winner of the prestigious ACES award Dr Rajen has been serving TML for about nine years now and has been playing a vital role in the ophthalmology department.

Tata Motors Hospital is 50 years old multispecialty DNB accredited post graduate teaching hospital. The hospital has state of the art infrastructure including the eye operation theater inaugurated last year . The OT is equipped with a phaco machine from Johnson and Johnson all the components of the system are fully integrated and designed to carry out advanced surgeries.

Dr. Rajen says, “When I look back at my experience working in the hospital, I know it has made me stronger and more appreciative. It has also inspired me to look at my priorities and remember what’s more important.”

In these unprecedented times people have been spending time in front of the gadgets more than ever Dr. Rajen raises his concern for the children who are spending hours in front of the mobile and laptop screens due to the online classes. He suggests using lubricant eye drops which can be used to reduce eye strain due to the blue light emitting from the screens. He also suggests coated glasses for the older people that filter the blue light and reduce radiation. Dr. Rajen also advises us to take some time off the screen because our blink rate goes down if we are constantly gazing at the gadgets.

When most of the hospitals across the country were partially working and not treating their regular patients TML was the only hospital that was fully functional and was open to treat their regular patients as well. The hospital had set up a core Covid team at the centre and individual unit teams. The core team ensured everyone kept abreast of the latest advisories and guidelines issued by both International and National bodies. “Patient safety is at the forefront of everything we do; speed of response at containing the disease is the need of the hour”, said Dr. Rajen as he gave us an insight about the TML hospital.
