The State Government on Sunday suspended the Jharpada Special Jail Chief Warder in connection with seizure of mobile phones and other prohibited items, including contraband, from the premises of the prison on Saturday. The Jail Chief Warder Sudarshan Barik was placed under suspension following a preliminary probe. After his suspension, the draft charges would be framed against him accordingly, official sources said. As per an order of DG (Prisons) Santosh Upadhyay, the Operation Cleanup has been intensified in the jails in the State in accordance with the 5T charter of the Government.
This drive has been undertaken following reports of gangsters managing to operate crime syndicates while being in the confines of the prisons. During the Operation Cleanup, the jail authorities on Saturday had recovered six unclaimed mobile phones, four SIM cards, five mobile chargers, one pen drive, five mobile batteries and 250 gram ganja from the Jharpada prison.The articles were seized from the backside of the dining hall and Ward No.15 near Ward No.1 and the segregation ward. An FIR in this regard was lodged at the Laxmisagar police station and the seized articles were handed over to the police.
