There is no greater virtue than Kanyadaan and its importance has increased on the day of Maghi Punni, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel said on Saturday.
He said this while attending a marriage held under the Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah Yojana at the Balbeer Singh Juneja Indoor Stadium Complex here.
A total of 3,229 couples got married under the scheme in Raipur and across the state.
Baghel said people are fed up with extravagant weddings and mass marriages are now being held with government help. He called this commendable.
The provision to give Rs 15,000 to the couples at mass weddings has been raised to Rs 25,000, he said.
Now a large number of tribal people as well as those of various castes and religions are getting married in this manner, he added.
Three Christian couples and a Muslim couple married in Raipur. All the weddings in the districts were connected to the marriage function in Raipur via video conferencing.
