ELEPHANTS WREAK HAVOC IN BBSR SLUM  

Bhubaneswar: Three elephants strayed into the Saraswati slum in Sailashree Vihar of the city on Wednesday night and wreaked havoc by damaging several houses and many parked vehicles. They went on a rampage at around 10 pm. A local also sustained injuries while trying to save him from the jumbos’ attack. The elephants entered the slum from the Chandaka forest in search of food. Forest officials reached the spot and managed to drive away the animals.

 

GAYATRIBALA PANDA GETS MAHURI SAMMAN  

Bhubaneswar: Well-known poet and writer Dr Gayatribala Panda has been chosen to be conferred with the Mahuri Samman instituted by the literary magazine ‘Mahuri’ for 2021. The honour would be bestowed on her in a function in January, said ‘Mahuri’ editor Dr Bhabani Shankar Nial.    Dr Panda has been chosen for the honour for the sharp feminist tone in her writings, he said.

 

GUTKHA FACTORY FIRE DEATH TOLL REACHES 2  

Sambalpur: The death toll due to the gutkha factory fire near Pardhiapali on the outskirts of Sambalpur town rose to two on Thursday with many others undergoing treatment at the in IGH Rourkela and fighting for life. BJP district president Girish Patel has pointed finger at the administration for its soft attitude towards the factory’s serious lapses for “monetary gains”.

 

DM, SP VISIT BSKY-LISTED PRIVATE HOSPS IN JSPUR 
Jagatsinghpur: Acting on the State Government instruction, Jagatsinghpur Collector Parul Patawari and SP Akheleshvar Sing visited private hospitals here to make sure they treat the beneficiaries of BSKY cardholders. The Collector interacted with the patients and enquired about their conditions and collected views regarding the service provider hospitals. Among others, ADMO Dr Satrughna Das, BSKY District Coordinator Prasant Kumar Sahoo and DHH medical staffs accompanied the Collector.

 

JSW PLANT: 9 VINES RAZED; RS 30L PAID

Jagatsinghpur: The betel vines demolition drive in the JSW project site in Govindpur continued with nine vines razed on Wednesday and Rs 30 lakh paid to the 14 betel farm growers as compensation. Two teams accompanied by the Ersama Tehsildar, police and JSW officials conducted the demolition drive. Meanwhile, the JSW authorities have planned to launch a socioeconomic survey at the project site villages soon.

 

PARADIP COLLEGE BOTANY DEPT ANNUAL SEMINAR HELD 

Paradip: The Department of Botany, Paradip College, organised its annual seminar for odd semester students on Tuesday on the theme of "Biodiversity". Environmentalist Bibhudutta Jena and Reader in Botany, ASD College Tapan Sahu were chief guest and chief speaker, respectively. Reader in Mathematics Ajaya Kumar Mishra presided over the meeting. Botany Lecturer Suchismita Sahoo introduced the guests.  Tapasmita Swain, +3 5th semester of Botany (Hons), presented the report of department. Students and teachers put queries, which were resolved by the guests and resource persons. Botany Lecturer Kakali Roy extended a vote of thanks.

 

SRM COURT: RS 12,900 FINE COLLECTED IN 69 CASES

Brahmapur: A Special Railway Magistrate (SRM) Court here with officers and staff of local RPF was successfully conducted. As many as 45 cases were taken up under the existing Railway Act and the offenders were produced before the SRM for consideration. Similarly, the Camp Court also disposed of 24 cases and fine worth Rs 4,300 was collected. The cases include 11 cases of chain pulling without reason, unauthorized hawking and trespassing. A total fine of Rs 12,900 was collected  from the defaulters in 69 cases by the RPF Post.
