Mahatma Gandhi has given the profound message of unity and equality to the whole world and it remains relevant even today, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel said on Saturday.

He was addressing the unveiling ceremony of a statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the Jaitusav Math premises, Purani Basti, here on the occasion of Gandhi's       martyrdom day.

The statue depicts Gandhiji working on a Charka, an official communication said.

Rajeshree Mahant Ramsunder Das for Jaitusav Math handed over a Rs 1.51 lakh cheque for the Chief Minister Relief Fund.

Baghel said Mahatma Gandhi was an apostle of truth and non-violence. He generated harmony in the whole society, making these as a weapon. He called for eradication of untouchability and uplift of women.

Jaitusav Math is also a major centre of religious faith and holds a unique place in heritage in both the political and historical perspective.

Baghel said narrow thoughts are being instigated into minds now. So, there is a need to take forward the ideology of Mahatma Gandhi to resolve to fight the negative forces.
