Cong youths, cops clash near Naveen Niwas

Sunday, 31 October 2021 | PNS | BHUBANESWAR

Youth Congress members on Saturday tried to gherao the Naveen Niwas here demanding dismissal and arrest of Minister Dibya Shankar Mishra for his alleged involvement in the Kalahandi teacher Mamita Meher murder case.

Hundreds of Youth Congress members led by State president Smruti Ranjan Lenka proceeded from Master Canteen Square towards the Chief Minister’s residence. But midway, they were stopped by police. This led to a scuffle between the agitators and the cops. Many agitators were taken into police custody.

Later, Lenka said the State Government and police have failed to provide justice to Mamita’s family by not conducting an impartial probe. Though Minister Mishra is directly involved in the incident, the Chief Minister is yet to sack him. Much time has passed, but police are yet to crack the case.r

The Minister has a close relationship with the Mamita case prime accused Govinda Sahu. That is why on his instructions, police deliberately allowed Govida to escape from custody and destroyed much crucial evidences. In the meantime, many witnesses have been influenced and Mamita’s family is unsafe, alleged Lenka.

After 21 days of the incident, after destroying all evidences, the Minister has broken his silence, but it has no meaning now. If the Minister is not removed now, a fair probe cannot be conducted, he said.

Party leaders MLAs Suresh Kumar Rautray and Mohammed Moquim and Ananta Sethi were present during the demonstration.
