In a complex surgery, doctors at Dr BR Ambedkar Memorial Hospital in Raipur saved from getting amputated a 65-year-old man's foot and toes that were blackened due to gangrene.
“Two toes of the left leg of the patient were completely blackened and were decaying but by superficial femoral artery stunting (SFA stunting) through DSA machine, a 23 cm long blockage in the superficial femoral artery was opened. It saved the patient's leg from getting amputated ,” the hospital said on Saturday in a statement.
The surgery was led by Dr S.B.S. Netam, Head of Radiology Department, and Interventional Radiologist Prof Dr Vivek Patre.
In medical language the disease is called left superficial femoral artery thrombosis with left toe gangrene. The patient, a resident of Bemetara, is now ready to go home after complete recovery.
Dr Patre said the patient used to have ‘rest pain’ while sitting and was unable to walk due to pain. CT angiography revealed the disease.
The treatment was done free under the Dr Khoobchand Baghel Health Scheme, Dr Patre added.
