Due to Cyclone Yaas, the fish farmers, including the shrimp as well as freshwater fish farmers of the district, have incurred heavy financial losses running into hundreds of crores. According to reports, the tidal surge to a height of about 13 -14 feet rose and saline water gushed into the dwelling houses, crop fields including the shrimp and fresh water fish cultivating ponds.
Reports said that 3,460 registered fish farmers had undertaken farming in an area over 2,463 hectares of land both shrimp and freshwater in Sadar, Bahanaga, Baliapal, Remuna and Bhograi.
The farming was undertaken on self-owned land as well as leased ones. The target of this year's yield was about 28 lakh quintals shrimps and two lakh quintals fresh water fish. Yet, the saline water ingression has shattered all hopes causing huge financial losses.
Reports also said that the size of shrimp was about 6 to 8 gram when they encountered the mishap.
The victim farmers said over 30 per cent of shrimp while were swept away by overfilled saline water, the rest died due to enhancement of salinity in water of the pond. Most of the farmers while undertook the farming in the leased lands and by using borrowed feeds and medicines from the dealers with expectation to repay the amount following harvesting, they are in a highly disturbed state after suffering the loss now.
According to an official of the Fisheries Department, the survey and assessment of the losses to the fish farmers were underway and whether unregistered farmers would get any compensation was still to be decided.
