Even as police and excise officials are intensifying their crackdown against the illegal contraband trade, the smugglers are trying new techniques to hoodwink them.
In an example, Excise Department officials on Saturday seized 20 quintals of ganja from a poultry feed-laden truck near the Kanisi area on the National Highway-16 in Ganjam distrcit and detained one person in connection with the seizure. The officials intercepted the truck based on specific inputs. The estimated price of the seized contraband was estimated to be about Rs 3 crore. During search, the ganja was found stacked below the poultry feed. Earlier on January 10, drug peddlers had used a SUV with ‘Police Escort’ sticker and a blue beacon to smuggle the same in Malkangiri districtHowever, the attempts to smuggle the contraband proved futile as police managed to nab the three peddlers.
