Boxing legend MC Mary Kom failed to win her sixth Gold medal in the Asian Boxing Championship as she had to settle for Silver after losing to Kazakhstan pugilist Nazym Kyzaibay in a high-octane 51kg final in Dubai on Sunday.
The six-time world champion lost in a split verdict of 2-3 with 29-28, 28-29, 30-27, 29-28, 28-29 scoreline.
Both the boxers started the summit clash with aggressive mindset and soon exchanged powerful blows attempting to unsettle each other. The five-time Asian Championships Gold medallist Mary Kom used all her experience against the Kazakh boxer, who is a two-time world champion and a six-time national champion and made her work hard but it wasn't enough as the later tilted the hard-fought game successfully in her favour and emerged champion.
On Monday, Amit Panghal (52kg), Shiva Thapa (64kg) and Sanjeet (91kg) will fight it out in the men's finals.
Panghal will square off against reigning Olympic and world champion Shakhobidin Zoirov of Uzbekistan. It will be a repeat of the 2019 world championship final in which the Indian had lost to settle for Silver.
Thapa will be up against Mongolia's Baatarsukh Chinzorig, who is the Asian Games Silver-medallist.
Sanjeet will take on Kazakh legend Vassiliy Levit, who is chasing his fourth Gold at the continental showpiece.
