Woman holding fast to appease Goddess dies

In a bizarre incident, a 42-year-old woman, who was driven by superstations to observe fast by closing the room to appease goddess, was found dead when the door was opened.

The incident occurred at  Julabalada  village of  Kulida GP under Basta police station and the deceased was identified Sukanti Dalei, wife of Rabindra Dalei. The incident came to light on Monday.

 According to reports  the woman used to worship Goddess Manasa . And every Tuesday and Friday people from her village and around used to visit her to seek relief  from her divine  power. For a few days, she was suffering from fever and she told her family members that she , according to dream directions (Swapnadesh), would be remaining alone in a room and none would disturb her. Three days passed  when a stinking smell emanated from the room. Yet her husband and family members   remained unmoved believing  that nothing occurred to her inside the room and she was safe.

The local Sarpanch Sunil Senapati  after learning  about the incident  while went to the house and asked  her husband  to open the door,  he faced resistance from him as well as her devotees and followers.

However, when finally the door was opened on insistance of the Sarpanch, the decomposed body of the woman was found.The cremation of the body was conducted on Monday after information was  given to her parents. No report has been made in this regard with the police, said IIC Ashok Nayak.
