Stranded Manipuris get community support

Amid the battle against surging coronavirus, several acts of humanity have not only lifted up the spirits of the people but also helped in motivating others to come forward to help those who are stranded in the city without any subsistence to survive. In similar attempts, a group of people, under the banner of ‘Delhi Manipuri Society’ (DMS), turned out saviour for hundreds of ‘Manipuris’ stranded across the Capital following the nationwide lockdown.

The members of the society are providing them with food and other essential items. They are also helping them financially.

Although Delhi Government and several other agencies have made proper arrangement for food and shelters across parts of the Capital to provide a much requisite succor but considering the gravity of the problem, the members of the society decided to trace people specially students from Manipur who has been living in all corners of Delhi and trapped by creating a WhatsApp group, said Ronendra Singh Sapam, a member of DMS.

Talking about the initiatives, he said that DMS started its campaign to distribute dry rations as relief material to the needy Manipuri students and families soon after the tracing their details. “The team has been distributing relief packet in multiple locations in the capital including Mahipalpur, Maidan Garhi, Neb Sarai, Malviya Nagar, South Extension, Ashram, Safdarjung Enclave and Jasola,” Ronendra said.

N Shyamkishwor Singh, secretary of DMS said “The distribution of the daily essential items is prioritized as per the requests received by the society. With the steady in-flow of donations from generous people around the country to the society, DMS will continue to cover more areas until the lockdown is lifted and as long as the necessity is felt.,”

“We distributed food packets in areas such as Uttam Nagar and Madhu Vihar on Wednesday under the guidance and active participation of DMS president Sapam Bishwajit,” he said,

Apart from providing food, the team is also lending a helping hand in the form of monetary assistance to the Manipuri nurses who had unfortunately tested Covid-19 positive while working as frontline warriors against the disease in various hospitals in Delhi, Singh said.
