The peace and harmony committee of Delhi Legislative assembly has called for the appearance of certain witnesses on Monday for examining them on oath.
To maintain the transparency in the functioning of the committee, the proceedings shall be live- streamed for more public outreach.
Importantly, Awesh Tiwari -a Chattisgarh based journalist who has lodged an FIR against against Ankhi Das (Senior official of Facebook) and 2 others shall be examined along with Kunal Purohit, Prabir Purkayastha, Subhash Gatade , Kiruba Munusamy and certain other complainants who have made allegations against the Facebook.
The committee through its Chairman Raghav Chadha on August 25 had examined Paranjoy Guha Thakurta- journalist and author and Nikhil Pahwa- digital rights activist thoroughly who deposed at length during the proceedings.
Guha, among other things, categorically deposed that Facebook platform is not as agnostic and content neutral as it claims to be. He further deposed that there are sufficient circumstantial evidences which show an alleged unholy nexus between the ruling dispensation and Facebook
Two witnesses also affirmed that- a free and fair investigation must be conducted by an independent investigating agency to painstakingly investigate the alleged inaction of the Facebook in curbing the hateful content
The Delhi Legislative assembly’s committee after the careful deliberations of the allegations levelled in the complaints has taken prompt cognizance of this issue and has set its mechanism in full swing
A formal notice have been sent to Tiwari, Kunal Purohit, Journalist, Prabir Purkayastha: Editor- News Click, journalist and Subhash Gatade, Independent Journalist and Kuruba Munusamy,
Advocate and a social, political and judicial activist for appearance before the committee on August 31with a view to carry out the relevant proceedings.
