At the time of the coronavirus spread, the blood bank at the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) here is experiencing an imminent threat to its stock as blood of different groups including rare ones is exhausting with no inflow.
The DHH usually collects about 1,500-1,600 units of blood averagely per month from voluntary collection through camps by different organisations. But the stock is drying up due to non-collection ever since the lockdown.
About 800 thalassimia patients depend on the DHH for blood at regular intervals. About 400 units of blood are used by delivery patients. As a whole, about 1,200 units of blood are needed per month.
Blood Bank Officer Basant Kumar Upadhyay said the bank could face acute shortage of blood if fresh collection is not made.
“Since blood collection camps are not possible under the prevailing circumstances, volunteers can come to the bank and donate blood to save the lives of the needy,” appealed Upadhyay.
Meanwhile, Chief District Medical Officer BP Chhotray informed that till Sunday health screening of 233 persons who arrived from abroad was carried out and 182 of them were under home quarantine. Besides, health checkup for 12,910 people, who came from other States, was conducted.
