The Birhor students adopted by SAIL-Bokaro Steel Plant as a CSR initiative under its Gyan Jyoti Yojana have found new mentors in a group of young executives of the plant. The young executives, mostly engineers and other professionals, have volunteered to take-out time from their daily schedules to take classes for them in different subjects during the lockdown period.
To motivate the mentors and take feedback from the Birhor students, senior officials of Bokaro Steel interacted with them in small groups on Saturday at Ispat Bhavan. Executive Director (P&A) Mukul Prasad, Executive Director (Projects) R Kushwaha, Executive Director (MM) VK Pandey and Executive Director (Finance) DK Saha were present on this occasion.
As part of SAIL’s SERVICE scheme of volunteerism, eleven executives of Bokaro Steel Plant have so far taken initiative for teaching these students during their off-duty hours. The second batch of 15 Birhor children, adopted by Bokaro Steel, are studying in the Bokaro Steel Kalyan Vidyalaya, an English Medium school affiliated to the CBSE Board. These children are presently in the IXth and Xth standards.
Notably, this school is run by Bokaro Steel exclusively for children from the underprivileged backgrounds and education is provided to them free of cost. The Birhor children are also being provided free accommodation and meals, school uniform, books and other amenities. The mentors are taking classes in the Birhor Bal Niwas where the children are lodged.
While interacting with the senior officials, the students gave feedback on their progress, daily study routines, follow-up assignments and also recreational activities undertaken by them within their residential complex during leisure time. The Executive Directors encouraged the students to make the most of this opportunity, understand the basics in all subjects and not to hesitate from asking questions from their mentors for clearing doubts.
