Two workers were killed when an under-repair bridge over the Suktel river collapsed at Patnagarh in Balangir district on Wednesday morning.
The deceased were natives Madhya Pradesh.
“Two persons, who are trapped under the debris, are my son and paternal cousin. We were engaged at the construction site when the bridge collapsed,” said worker Mayaram of Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh.
Receiving information, the Balangir police rushed to the site and launched an operation to rescue the workers.
The bridge was constructed to connect Tamian and Mudalsar in the district four years ago. Notably, the foundation-stone of the bridge was laid in January 7, 2014 and Ram Kumar Agarwal Engineers Private Limited had taken up the project. Constructed at an estimated cost of nearly Rs 7 crore, the construction of the bridge was completed in July 3, 2015 against the deadline on February 2016 for which the contractor was rewarded.
The bride was inaugurated on July 3, 2015. A few years after the construction, the damage was found in 182.19-metre-long structure following which the contractor agreed to repair the damaged portion.
