The ‘One Nation, One Election’ system can prevent the impact of the model code of conduct on development works and human resources, energy, time and financial resources can be saved, said BJP national spokesperson and Bhubaneswar MP Aparajita Sarangi here on Wednesday. “Besides, it will exert less pressure on the administrative machinery and the loss to the GDP can be minimised,” she added.
In the election model prevalent in the country from 1951-1952 to 1967, the General Election and the Assembly Elections had been held at a time. At the later stages, Article 356 of the Constitution was misused and elected Governments were dismissed., due to which the ‘One Nation, One Election’ system couldn’t be held, the MP said. In 1983, the Election Commission had argued in favour of one election. But due to lack of political will it was not accepted. In 2015, the Parliamentary Standing Committee had submitted a report to hold the Lok Sabha and Assembly Elections at a time. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has shown interest for one election and taken steps for discussions on it, Sarangi said.
