MAHA RECORDS 16K CASES FOR 2ND DAY, 296 DIE

In a clear indication of an aggravating pandemic situation, Maharashtra on Sunday recorded 16,000-plus infections for the second consecutive day on Sunday, while 296 more succumbed to Coronavirus in various parts of the state. 

A day after it logged an all-time high of 16,867 infections, 16,408 more people tested positive for Covid-19 on Sunday, taking the total number of positive cases in the state to 7,80,689.

Similarly, with fresh deaths, the Covid-19 in the state rose to 24,399.

Of the 296 fatalities reported on Sunday, Nagpur circle topped the  list with 45 deaths, followed by 39 deaths in Pune, 30 each in Mumbai and Thane, 28 in Kolhapur, 18 in Sangli, 14 in Palghar and 10 in Jalgaon.

On the lower side, there were 9 deaths in Ahmednagar, 6 each in Nashik, Solapur, Aurangabad, Latur and Amravati, 5 each in Raigad, Nandurbar, Satara, Ratnagiri and Nanded, 4 in Parbhani, 3 each in Dhule, Beed and Akola, 2 in Osmanabad and one death in Yavatmal. In addition, two persons from other states died in Maharashtra.

In a couple of notable features, Nagpur circle and Kolhapur witnessed sudden spurt in fatalities, while on the positive side,  as many as ten districts in the state reported zero deaths.

With 30 fresh deaths, Mumbai’s Covid-19 toll rose from 7,596 to 7626, while the number of infected cases increased by 1,237  to touch 1,44,626. Pune district with 1,73,174 infected cases continued to be the worst-affected city-district in Maharashtra. The number of deaths in Pune increased from 4021 to 4060.

Thane district remained on the third spot --after Pune and Mumbai – with 1,31,352 total cases, while the pandemic toll rose from 3747 to 3777.

Meanwhile, as many as 7,690 patients were discharged from hospitals in the state after full recovery, taking the total number of patients discharged from various hospitals after full recovery since the second week of March this year to 5,62,401. The recovery rate stood at 72.04 per cent. The mortality rate in the state is 3.13 per cent. The state health authorities pegged the number of “active cases” in the state at 1,93,548.

Out of 40,84,754 samples sent to laboratories, 7,80,689 have tested positive (19.11 per cent) for COVID-19 until Sunday. Currently, 13,09,676 people are in home quarantine while 35,373  people are in institutional quarantine.
