Two men have been taken into custody for allegedly stealing from the donation box of the Piran Kaliyar Dargah in Roorkee area of Haridwar. One of the two is a current worker in the Dargah while the other is an ex-worker. The police recovered the stolen money from the arrested accused.
Disclosing the matter on Monday, the Kaliyar police station in-charge told reporters that Dargah manager Pravez Alam had given a complaint at the police station stating that the shrine management keeps donations in the VIP room of the office.
After that a revenue department team visited the site to check the donations and on suspecting possibility of theft, sealed the room and informed the joint magistrate of Roorkee, Namami Bansal.
On Bansal’s instructions, the CCTV footage was checked which showed that on December 23, two persons including a former employee Babu and a current employee Nadeem broke into a donation box and filled a bag with money.The police registered a case against both and began searching for them.
Acting on a tip off, the police nabbed the duo. During interrogation, the accused confessed that they had opened a sealed donation box using a blade and after stealing the money, sealed it again.
The police also recovered the stolen cash from them- Rs 27,800 from Nadeem and Rs 35,000 from Babu. The two accused were presented in the court from where they were sent to jail.
