Approving the long pending demand of Punjab’s registered labourers, the State Government on Wednesday gave a go-ahead to provide scholarship to the students of registered industrial workers from the first grade instead of sixth grade.
The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by the state Labour Minister-cum-Punjab Labour Welfare Board chairman Balbir Singh Sidhu. “Punjab Labour Welfare Board is presently providing Rs 5000 to Rs 7000 scholarship for students of industrial workers from Class VI till degree course, Rs 31,000 at the time of marriage of labourer’s daughter under Shagun scheme,” he said.
Sidhu said that the Labour Department is now registering the workers online so that every worker can get benefit of the welfare schemes within time.
Suggesting that in case unregistered industrial worker dies in an accident, the Department should immediately have a provision to release some financial aid, the Minister ordered the Principal Secretary (Labour) to constitute a committee to look into the suggestion by initiating a new scheme for unregistered worker.
The Minister added that special awareness campaign is being conducted to provide maximum benefit of the welfare schemes to the industrial workers.
