The Chandigarh Administration will soon release city’s first sports policy.
The sports policy will lay down the procedure for giving cash awards and facilities to the sportspersons belonging to the city. The issue was discussed at the meeting of UT Administrator Advisory Council’s Standing Committee on Sports held here on Friday. Standing committee chairperson city BJP president Sanjay Tandon chaired the meeting.
During the meeting, it was proposed that the sportspersons of the city will get reservations in sports academies run by the Chandigarh Administration. 80 percent seats in hockey, football and cricket academy will be reserved for city players.
It was also proposed that the players of the city will get cash awards equal to Punjab and Haryana if they win medals at national and international levels.
The committee decided that a state level tournament of all sports will be organized by the Sports Department to encourage sports and sportspersons in the city. Along with this, it was decided to visit these complexes from time to time by the members of the Advisory Committee to solve the problems faced by the players.
Sports advisory committee, chairman Sanjay Tandon said that the help of international level players associated with the city will also be taken to promote sports in the city.
Sports director Tej Deep Singh Saini gave information about the ongoing projects of sports in the city. He said that world class shooting range would be set up on 23 acres of land in Sarangpur. In addition, an international level skating rink will be built in Sector 23 and Synthetic track of athletics will be laid in the sports complex of Sector 7.
The advisory committee on sports also includes Olympic medalist Abhinav Bindra as a member but he did not attend Friday’s meeting. President golf club, director NZCC Saubhagya Vardhan and Promila Chandermohan are also members of this committee.
Notably, the standing committees under UT Administrator Advisory Council make an in-depth study of issues related to their concerned subjects and make recommendations to the Advisory Council.
