Two villagers, including a woman, were killed in separate incidents of elephant attack in Jashpur and Raigarh forests, officials said on Tuesday.
The incidents took place in Jashpur and Raigarh districts on Monday evening, they said.
In Jashpur, a 65-year-old Thunthuni Bai was killed in the attack by pachyderm in the forest near Eib river in Narayanpur area when she had gone there to collect mushroom, said Krishna Kumar Jadhav, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Jashpur division.
The jumbo caught hold of the woman, lifted her with its trunk and slammed her on the ground, killing her on the spot, he said.
In a separate incident, a 75-year-old Kalindar Rathiya was killed after he was attacked by a herd of four elephants in the forest near Krondha village under Dharmjaigarh forest division of Raigarh, a local forest official said.
Forest personnel rushed to both the spots after getting information about the incidents and sent the bodies for post mortem, they said.
The kin of the deceased persons have been provided immediate relief of Rs 25,000 each while remaining compensation will be given upon completion of all formalities, they said.
Several incidents of human-elephant conflict have been reported in the recent past from the thick forested northern Chhattisgarh, consisting of Surguja, Surajpur, Korba, Raigarh, Jashpur, Balrampur and Korea districts.
The region has witnessed killing of several villagers and widespread damage to houses and crops by rogue elephants.
