Prez to award degrees at RU’s 33rd convocation

Monday, 30 September 2019 | PNS | Ranchi

State’s oldest and largest university in Jharkhand -- Ranchi University— is going to hold to its 33rd annual convocation on Monday. The convocation will be held at glittering function at convocation ground (Morhabadi) of the University.  The chief guest of the function is President Ramnath Kovind and as many as 56 topper students from different post graduate departments are going to get gold medals and certificates.

The RU convocation assumes importance as after a gap of nearly 10 ten years President of India is going to attend the convocation.  At the 25th annual convocation of varsity held on December 2010, then President Pratibha Patil was the chief guest. Prior to Pratibha Patil, former President APJ Abdul Kalam too had graced the annual convocation of RU.Meanwhile, the RU administration has made elaborate arrangements for annual convocation. Ranchi University deputy registrar, Pritam Kumar said, “The University will hold 33rd annual convocation in which around 4000 students will get their degrees. 56 topper students will get gold medals on the occasion. Out of 56 gold medalists, there are 46 girls student.”

However, sources said that out of 56 gold medalists, the President will personally hand over the medals and certificates to only 11 students who are toppers from different faculties. As per President’s Itinerary, the function will start at 10.10 am with President leaving the function at 11.10. Apart from 56 gold medalists, around 4000 students from different departments will receive the certificates. Sources said that as the varsity has to award degrees to 4000 students, the function will continue till afternoon.

Meanwhile, the university administration has prepared the dress code for convocation. Like previous convocation, this year too RU will have dress code.

For girls, the dress code will be white saree with red border and red blouse or white salwar kurta with red dupatta and for boys it will be white dhoti-kurta or white pyjama-kurta. Ranchi University in March this year decided to replace the quintessential British attire consisting of black robes and square caps with Indian traditional wear for the convocation.

Te students are much excited to attend the annual convocation. Sumit Sagar, a post graduate student of chemistry department said, “We are much excited to attend the annual convocation as President Kovind is to hand over degrees and medals.”

The Ranchi University set up on July, 1960 is one of the oldest and biggest university with its jurisdiction spread in five districts.

Located in tribal areas, the university has lived upto the expectations and aspirations of the people since its existence. The university once covered most of the parts of state before it was bifurcated into Vinoba  Bhave University, Hazaribagh (1992), Nilambar Pitamber University, Medninagar and Kolhan University, Chaibasa (both in 2009).
