Pragya, Uma deny differences

Tuesday, 30 April 2019 | Staff Reporter | Bhopal

It was a unique moment in the State Capital on Monday when BJP’s candidate from Bhopal Pragya Thakur and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Uma Bharti posed for a happy union here.

Both the sadhvis denied any disagreement or resentment between them. The cordial meet came after Bharti’s several takes on Thakur and ended with Thakur breaking down as Bharti came out of her residence to see her off.

A couple of days ago, on being asked whether Thakur was her political successor in BJP in Madhya Pradesh, Bharti had said, “Vo to mahan sant hain, main to murkh, tuchh prani hun (Pragya is a great saint, I am a moron and no match for her,” Bharti had said triggering speculations that the firebrand sadhvi wasn’t happy with the rise of Thakur in MP.

Bharti on the next day also had called Pragya Thakur a mahan sant saying she was no match for her. As Bharti landed in Bhopal, Thakur, the BJP Bhopal lok sabha candidate called on her at former’s residence and the two embraced each other happily.

Bharti, on that occasion, also greeted Thakur’s wit sweets, tilak and flowers and the both denied having any rift and called it a media stunt.

Bharti, on the occasion stood her ground saying Pragya Thakur spiritually was much higher than her and called her custodial tortures—a great sacrifice. She also coined a new address ‘Didi Ma’ for Thakur.

For the unintuitive, it was Bharti in Madhya Pradesh who had openly backed Thakur’s arrest in 2008 in connection with Malegaon blasts and had even offered her ticket from Bharatiya Jan Shakti party, a breakaway faction of BJP led by Bharti.

“I have been a former MP from Bhopal and she is contesting for Lok Sabha poll now so don’t link the meeting as ruthna-manana (sulking and appeasement),” Bharti told the media, opining a sadhvi would defeat Digviajay Singh after 16 years.

I am personally happy with her candidature, said Bharti calling Thakur an exceptional saint.

Thakur too lashed at reports that Bharti was upset with her saying saints are always linked to each other at heart and there is nothing like aguish or confusion among them. Politics goes on but we are always together, she added.
