Power tariff hiked citing fuel price rise

Saturday, 30 November 2019 | Staff Reporter | RAIPUR

Chhattisgarh Power Companies Chairman Shailendra Shukla intimated that under Variable Cost Adjustment (VAC) under first 100 units no VAC charge has been hiked while from 100-200 units two paise and for more 3 paise per unit additional VAC has been imposed, which will be levied in November-December 2019 electricity bill.

The hike has been initiated due to rise in coal and oil price and is based on Chhattisgarh State Electricity Regulatory Commission’s rules and directives and Electricity Act section 62(4).

Shukla further intimated that the power tariff fixation is done by regulatory  commission and the           commutation of variation in coal and oil is done since May 2012 each quarterly till September 2015 but after which rate is fixed two-monthly basis. In state half rate scheme is still implemented for domestic consumers.

Meanwhile, BJP state spokesperson Sachchidanand Upasane has condemned the hike in power tariff as already the state is facing lack of continuous power supply.

It would put an additional financial load on the consumers, he claimed.

He alleged that the Congress had promised reduction of power tariff by half to come to power now within 11 months, it is the fifth time the power tariff has been hiked, which is around 61 paise per unit. It is due to mismanagement that such a situation has arisen.

He added every time the government comes up with some or other excuse to hike the rates.
