Park on old trenching ground may take years

Thursday, 31 January 2019 | PNS | DEHRADUN

Despite the official claims of turning old trenching ground at Sahastradhara Road into a park, it may take seven to eight years to actually execute the plan due to technical factors. Meanwhile, senior officials at the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) state that building the proposed park is one of the main priorities and that passing and execution of the proposal might start soon.

According to information provided by sources, the old trenching ground is now filled with non-bio-degradable garbage that makes any activity like building a park impossible at the site. Some spots in the old trenching ground even catch fire because of the methane activity from decomposed garbage in the place. The only way of giving new shape to the dumping ground is to use the capping technique. The capping technique basically means putting layers of soil in the area which are further left to settle for nearly seven to eight years. During the process, no activity can be done on the trenching ground.

On the other hand, senior officials claim that work on the proposal of developing the park will start as soon as possible. The municipal commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey stated that making the park at the old trenching ground is one of his main priorities and the proposal for it may be passed really soon after which the construction would start.

The mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ himself agreed that the proposal would be passed and work would start soon on the park and be completed within a couple of years. When he was informed about the fact that the ground needs capping which may take seven to eight years he said, “The project will be undertaken on Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode and necessary efforts in this regard will be made by the executing agency.”
