Keonjhar man held for smuggling 35kg ganja 

Phulbani: Acting on a tipoff, the Phiringia police on Tuesday arrested a person while he was transporting 35 kg of ganja from Muslipanga village to Keonjhar. The arrestee was identified as Chittaranjan Pradhan (42) of Khuntapada village in Keonjhar district. The police also seized a car by which the accused was transporting the contraband. Pradhan was forwarded to court. 

Maniabandha College celebrates 29th anniversary

Athagarh: The Maniabandha College celebrated its 29th anniversary on Monday. Teachers and senior students welcomed the students of Plus Two first year and advised them to be good enough to maintain the academic ambience of the college. The meeting was presided over by Principal Bijaya Kumar Parida. Teachers and students recalled the contributions of the college’s founding fathers for higher education in the area. Students performed cultural programmes. Degree College Principal Ajaya Kumar Satpathy and other teaching and nonteaching staffs were present.

Girls’ self-defence training held in Bhapur 

Bhapur: A workshop on self-defence skill training for girls was held at the Kabiraj Baidyanath High School under Bhapur block in Nayagarh district on Monday. While headmaster of the school Manoj Kumar Satpathy presided, local Sarpanch Rojalin Panigrahi joined as chief guest. Rajlaxmi Sahu, PET of Karabara Girls’ High School and Binodini Dei, PET of Natabara Girls’ High School, Padmabati, joined as trainers, where 50 girl students were imparted various skills for self-defence.   

Engineer dies in road mishap in Kandhamal

Phulbani: An engineer was killed when a cement mixer-laden truck hit a roadside tree near Dadanga under the Tumudibandha police station in Kandhamal district late on Monday night. The deceased Suryakant Senapati was working as a civil engineer at the RKD Construction Private Ltd. Senapati was returning to his house in the truck. The driver identified as Laxman Sethy fled from the spot. The accident occurred due to speedy driving, police said.

Training on GP dev plans held in Balangir

Balangir: A three-day training programme on gram panchayat (GP) development plans was held here. It was attended by women SHG members of Bidighat, Sahajbahal, Sibtala, Baidipali and Chikalbahal panchayats. Balangir Block Chairman Golap Bag opined for effective participation in and implementation of panchayat development plans. BDO Ramdutta Bhoi stressed the need to plant more Munuga, papaya and lemon trees in the Anganwadi Centres and rural households to get economic and nutrition benefits.
