Slamming Punjab Government over the proposed hike in the electricity tariff which was already on the higher side, Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Punjab unit on Monday said that it would reach out to the Government demanding roll back on the “anti-people” decision besides changing the power purchase agreements with the private companies.
Seeking a rollback on the proposed exorbitant hike, and pressing upon tweaking the “one-sided” power agreements entered into by the erstwhile Badal government, AAP leaders would submit memorandums in every district of the State through respective Deputy Commissioners (DCs) on Tuesday.
AAP MLAs Aman Arora and Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, in a joint statement, described the sharp hike the electricity tariff as an “anti-people” decision of the government, which would hit all sections of the society and thus, the government should mull an immediate roll back.
“Government’s decision to raise the electricity tariff further by 36 paise per unit in the State from January 1, 2020, is a lopsided, which would leave every consumer in a fresh financial quandary,” they said.
Citing an example of the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi Government providing
cheaper electricity to the people there, they said that the Punjab Government should replicate the Delhi model in the State.
“If the government in Delhi could afford cheaper electricity to consumers in Delhi, why couldn’t Punjab government do in the state?” they asked.
