The Regional Office of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) here on Saturday issued a red alert for the State as a low pressure forming over the Bay of Bengal is intensifying and slowly moving towards the west.
A monsoon trap line has become active on the upper part of atmosphere following which some parts of the State have already started to witness rainfall.
The IMD has also predicted that rainfall would increase across the State from Saturday and Sunday onwards. Some parts of the
State may receive heavy rainfall till July 2.
Ganjam, Gajapati, Koraput, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Kalahandi and Nuapada districts are likely to witness very heavy rainfall (up to 4cm) on July 2. Sundargarh would also record around 3 to 4 cm rainfall, whereas Khordha, Puri and Cuttack to record around 2 to 3 cm rainfall. Rest of the State is likely to receive rainfall in the range of 1 to 2 cm.
The rainfall would decrease from July 3. In view of a possible flood like situation due to heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas of Mahanadi river, the State Relief Commissioner (SRC) Office has alerted the district Collectors and asked them to take adequate measures to deal with any eventuality.
Fishermen have been asked not to venture into the sea as squally weather with wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph is likely to prevail along the Odisha coast for the next three days.
