The Forum for Ganjam on Friday observed fast to commemorate the first arrival of Mahatma Gandhi to Brahmapur. Gandhi had come here along with Gopabandhu Das on March 29, 1921 and addressed a mammoth gathering at the Barracks Maidan, now known as the Brahmapur Stadium.
Gandhi had stayed in late Lingaraj Panigrahi’s house here. His teachings of nonviolence and love for humanity are a pressing need of the present day world, especially in contemporary India, recalled forum members. Gandhi’s noble preaching of love against evil has prompted the forum to commemorate that great event in the history of Brahmapur town.
Ten forum members observed the fast near Bapu’s statue at Gandhi Nagar Square from 7 am to 7 pm with an appeal to the public to eschew violence, abjure alcohol and other intoxicants, love the humanity and preserve the environment for the future generation.
Keeping the coming general elections in mind the forum members also made an appeal to all to vote the candidate of their own choice to make the democracy more effective and meaningful.
