Five Naxals, all carrying cash rewards on their heads gave up arms before police in the insurgency-hit Dantewada district, police said here on Friday.
The cadres, including a woman, turned themselves in before senior police and CRPF officials at Dantewada town, a local police official said.
Of the surrendered, Shanti Ista (35), who was active as a member of military platoon no. 24 of Maoists, was the most dreaded one, he said.
Shanti was involved in major Naxal attacks including the Nilawaya attack during last year assembly election in which three security personnel and the cameraman of Doordarshan were killed, the official said.
The equally hardcore, Jairam Mandavi (20), a member of Hadnwada LOS (local organisation squad) of Maoists, was also allegedly involved in deadly attacks on security forces in the district, he said.
Rest of the surrendered cadres identified as Mahruram Banjam, in-charge of Pallewaya medical team of Maoists, Naresh Netam (20) and Mangal Ista (20), both active as head of Chetna Natya Mandli (CNM, a cultural wing of Maoists), he said.
While Shanti and Banjam were carrying reward of Rs 2 lakh each on their heads, remaining three cadres were carrying reward of Rs 1 lakh each, he added.
In their statements, they said they were disappointed with the Maoist hollow ideology and hardships of the jungle,” he said.
A cash of Rs 10,000 were also given to each of the surrendered rebels as immediate financial relief and they will be further provided assistance as per the surrender and rehabilitation policy of the state, he added.
