A cyclonic storm accompanied by thunder and hailstorms on Tuesday evening caused massive damages to properties in the district.
The effect was seen across all the blocks, but extensive damage to vegetables was witnessed in Jaleswar, Bhograi, Sadar ,Baliapal and Basta in North Baleswar. The severe storm inflicted massive damages in village Kalika in Raibania under Jaleswar block.
According to eyewitnesses, the intensity of the storm was so powerful roof of a fuel filling station of the village was blown away. A pick-up van which was parked in the premises of outlet was lifted about four to five feet from the ground. Besides, a roadside cabin flew away and fell about 30 metre away in a paddy field. The shop keeper sustained injuries. Similarly, a motor cycle parked near the outlet was thrown away with the intensity of the whirl wind .
Several trees and electric poles were uprooted and wires snapped. The cyclone also damaged most of the banners and billboards and their structures erected by different political parties for the elections. However, there are no reports of any casualties from any part of the district.
A district-level official said the damage assessment report is yet to be received. Similarly, reports stated that the hailstorm caused extensive damage to the Rabi crop and the vegetables grown in Bhograi, Basta , Baliapal, Sadar and Remuna.
