In a challenge to the Commissionerate police, three unidentified criminals looted gold ornaments from a couple at gunpoint near the Kelucharan Park in the Gadakana area under the Mancheswar police station here on Tuesday.
Umakant Mishra along with his wife and two children was heading towards the railway station by an auto-rickshaw at around 5 am when the three motorbike-borne robbers intercepted them near the Kelucharan Park.
They forced Mishra’s wife to give her gold bangles, chain and earrings by putting guns on the heads of her husband and daughters and sped away from the spot in a flash after the loot.
Besides, guns, the criminals were also armed with a chopper, an iron rod and a hammer.
Later, the couple lodged a complaint with the Mancheswar police regarding the incident but do not have much hope of the criminals being nabbed.
On the basis of the complaint, police registered a case and initiated a probe. The incident has triggered panic in the area.
Of late, though the police have been carrying out roadblocks at night and conducting frisking of vehicles, the chain snatchers taking advantage of low police visibility and patrolling at the wee hours are targeting morning walkers and people, who are going to the bus-stand or railway station.
