A meeting of newly elected Congress Corporators of Raipur Municipal Corporation was held on Monday at party’s state headquarters Rajiv Bhawan to discuss about election of Raipur’s new Mayor.
It was decided that the announcement of the name for the Mayoral election to be held on January 6 would be made a day earlier i.e. on January 5.
There is a close contest between three party bigwigs for the Mayoral post namely former Mayor Pramod Dubey, Ejaj Dhebar and Gyanesh Sharma.
Congress sources said the name to be finalized would be up to the Corporators and will not be imposed by the party high command.
Notable, though Congress has two Corporators short from majority mark, it is well assured of getting support from independent Corporators. Out of 70 total wards, Congress won in 34, while the number of independent candidates who have succeeded in recently concluded civic body elections are seven.
On the other hand the BJP clinched victory in 29 wards and it is also claiming for the Mayoral post asserting that it has support of independent as well as some Congress Corporators.
