As the five members committee wraps up the process to ascertain the reasons for the defeat of the Congress candidates in the Lok Sabha polls, the party is expected to go in for changes at district and block levels.
A senior party leader said the committee members took feedback from the seven district presidents and two party candidates in the just-concluded polls in the national Capital on Thursday. “The committee will meet again on Saturday to take feedback from the other party candidates,” he said, adding that the committee is assessing the role of party leaders, including district presidents and other office-bearers, some of whom may face the axe for contributing to the party’s defeat in the polls.
He said that the committee has received some very important suggestions to improve our performance in the coming Assembly election in Delhi. “The members will again meet with block presidents before submitting the final report to the Delhi Congress chief,” he said.
However, questioning the authority of the committee, a section of the Delhi Congress leaders raised their concerns, saying that the conduct of some members in the committee itself was questionable during the election.
The Congress lost to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in all the seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi with huge margins. Even party president Dikshit was defeated by Delhi BJP Delhi unit president Manoj Tiwari from North East Delhi by a huge margin of 3.66 lakh votes.
Thursday’s meeting of the committee went on for four hours. The panel members held discussions with the district presidents and party candidates Rajesh Lilothia and Vijender Singh, who had contested the polls from North West Delhi and South Delhi respectively.
The Congress president Sheila Dikshit had appointed a five member committee to examine the reasons for the defeat in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections in Delhi. The committee comprising former MP Parvez Hashmi, former Delhi ministers AK Walia and Yoganand Shastri, the party’s national spokesperson Pawan Khera and former MLA Jaikishan has been asked to submit its report in 10 days.
The Congress secured 22.5 per cent votes in Lok Sabha polls and finished second in five of the seven seats in Delhi. The party is trying hard to win back its vote share in the next assembly election as well.
The Assembly election is due in Delhi early next year. The committee will also suggest about the strategy need to be adopted by the party to ensure the victory in the upcoming Assembly elections in Delhi and how to further strengthen the party organisation in Delhi.
