City sees 3 suicide cases in 12 hours

Three incidents of alleged suicide were reported in the national Capital in last 12 hours. A 30-year-old resident doctor of Safdarjung Hospital was found dead on Tuesday morning in his room at a rented accommodation in southeast Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar area. While in another incident, an Army officer’s body was found on the railway track at the New Delhi railway station on Monday morning. In the third incident, a 27-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself on ceiling fan at her residence in West Delhi’s Janakpuri area on Monday evening.

In first incident, the deceased was identified as  Dr Sudhanshu, a native of Mughalsarai in Uttar Pradesh and he was pursuing a post-graduation in Anesthesia from Safdarjung Hospital.

“Police had received the information on Tuesday at around 9 am regarding the incident. When a police team reached the spot where Dr Rudra Nayak (27), flat mate of the Sudhanshu told the police about foul smell that emanating from the room of Sudhanshu,” said Chinmoy Biswal, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), South-East district.

“Police broke open the door and found Sudhanshu lying on a mattress with an intravenous drip in his arm. He was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared brought dead,” said the DCP.

Sudhanshu and Nayak have been staying at the rented accommodation in Lajpat Nagar since May 2018. Nayak is pursuing PG from LNJP Hospital. Nayak told police that he had gone to his native place in Panaji, Goa, on July 19 and returned at around 2 am on Tuesday.

“On Tuesday morning at around 8 am, when Nayak woke up, he saw Sudhanshu’s room locked from inside and a foul smell emanating from it. He asked the maid about Sudhanshu but she was clueless,” said the DCP.

“Later, he called police at around 9 am. Police broke open the door and found the body. No suicide note was recovered from the room. Both Nayak and Sudhanshu’s sister Shwetleen, who lives in Gurugram, said the her brother never mentioned any issue that was bothering him. They claimed that he was not depressed,” said the DCP.

In another incident, a 26-year-old Army Captain’s body was found on a railway track at the New Delhi railway station. The body of the officer, identified as  Captain Diwakar Puri, was found into two pieces on Monday morning.

According to a senior police official, Puri was from the Army Medical Corps and was a resident of Rohini in Delhi. “He had gone to Lucknow around two months ago to attend a training and was returning to Delhi from Shramjeevi Express on Monday,” said the senior police official.

“Puri was sleeping in his coach and one attendant had asked him to wake up as he reached Delhi. He left his three bags and went to back side of the platform,” said a police official.

“The attendant submitted his bags to Railway Police Force. Police have checked CCTV footage and found that Puri was going towards Sadar Bazar railway station from New Delhi station. Around 11 am, his body was found near Sadar Bazar railway station,” said the police official. 

“The post-mortem has been conducted and the body has been handed over to the deceased’s family. No foul play has been suspected,” said the police official.

In third incident reported from West Delhi’s Jankapuri area, a 27 year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself on ceiling fan at her residence. The incident occurred on Monday evening. Police said that the woman was under depression.

The deceased identified as Sonali, was preparing for UPSC and she was also a qualified chartered accountant. According to Monika Bhardwaj, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), West district, a police control room (PCR) call was received regarding the incident at around 7 PM on Monday following which an Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) was dispatched for the spot.

“ Sonali was found hanging at her home. She was taken to nearby hospital where doctors declared her brought dead,” said the DCP.
