Amid the debate over the construction of a seven feet high wall around the premises of heritage building of Punjab and Haryana High Court for security reasons, the UT Administration is likely to take up the issue in Chandigarh Heritage Conservation Committee’s meeting.
The security committee of the Punjab and Haryana High Court had asked the UT Administration to construct a high security boundary wall, not less than seven ft in height, with a concertina coil covering the entire boundary of the HC premises.
As the order has put the senior officials of the Administration in a fix due to the heritage status of the Capitol Complex, the CHCC is likely to take final decision on the issue.
To supervise the architectural preservation plans in the city, the UT Administration had constituted CHCC in 2012.
A senior UT officer said that due to the heritage status of HC buildings, the issue of construction of wall in the premises may be taken up in the CHCC meeting and a decision will be taken accordingly.
Chandigarh’s Capitol Complex was declared a World Heritage site by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in the year 2016.
The main buildings in Capitol Complex are the Secretariat complex, the Legislative assembly complex and the High Court. In its letter to the UT Administration, the committee stated.
“The Engineer is directed to undertake construction of a boundary wall, not less than 7 ft in height, with a concertina coil covering the entire boundary of the of the High Court premises beyond the imaginary heritage boundary line within three weeks from today.”
