Expressing shock over the reported incident, Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh on Friday demanded firm action against those involved in the abduction, and forcible conversion to Islam, of a Sikh girl in Pakistan.
The Chief Minister has sought the immediate intervention of both, the Pakistan Government and the Indian Government in the matter.
He has called upon Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan to take stern action against the culprits, while also urging the Union External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to take up the issue with his counterpart in
Islamabad immediately.
Responding to reports of the incident, Amarinder expressed anger saying that those responsible for the crime should not be allowed to get away. “Religion is a personal matter and forcible conversion of this kind has no place in any society,” he asserted.
Earlier, the Chief Minister tweeted, “Shocking incident of a Sikh girl being kidnapped and forced to convert to Islam in Nankana Sahib, Pakistan. Call upon @ImranKhanPTI to take firm and immediate action against the perpetrators. Request @DrSJaishankar to strongly take up the issue with his counterpart at the earliest.”
The Chief Minister’s statement was in response to media reports stating that a Sikh girl was abducted and forcefully converted in Pakistan’s Nankana Sahib city. The girl’s family had alleged that she was kidnapped and forced to marry a Muslim boy after being forcefully converted to Islam.
A video of the girl’s wedding ceremony had also gone viral on the social media, prompting the Chief Minister’s swift and strong reaction.
In the video message,
the family of the girl has claimed that she was abducted and forcibly converted to Islam.
The family also has alleged that they are being threatened with forcible conversion to Islam, and have appealed to the Prime Minister Imran Khan and Pakistan Army chief General Qamar Bajwa to restore the girl to them and ensure their protection.
In another video, the family of the girl alleged that she was “abducted” and “threatened” that if she didn’t convert into Islam, her brothers and father would be shot dead.
Several videos related to the incident went viral. In a clip, the girl introduced herself as Jagjit Kaur. Her “nikahnama” was read out and she was asked for her consent for marrying Mohammad Hussain Zulfikar. Later, she was seen admitting to the marriage and changing her name to Ayesha as per her own will.
On the other hand, it has been learnt that after the girl went missing, her family had lodged a complaint with the Nankana Sahib City police station. In another video, her brothers and father claimed that Jagjit was picked up by unidentified people, forced to change her religion and was married to a Muslim.
Meanwhile, former Minister and Punjab’s senior BJP leader Manoranjan Kalia has also condemned the incident while appealing to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and “take up the matter at the proper forum to ensure the safety and the security of the victim girl and family and also the minorities in Pakistan”.
“This is the tip of an iceberg of the volatile situation prevailing in Pakistan in regard to the forcible conversions of Hindu, Sikh, and Christian girls into Islam and thereafter being married to Muslim men. That is the cardinal reason of a demographic reduction of minorities in Pakistan,” he said.
