Two men on bikes snatched Rs 3lakh from a retired school teacher near Kaswari Road under Saria police station area of Giridih here on Wednesday. The incident took place barely a few minutes after the victim, identified as Shiv Lal Mandal, withdrew the money at 12.30 pm.
Mandal was about to keep the packet containing the cash in his scooter's tool box. But just as he unlocked the box, a youth in his mid-twenties came from behind and snatched the packet.
Although Singh (61) screamed for help, the youth and his accomplice, who were waiting on a bike, fled.
The victim, a resident of Keswari village at Giridih, rushed to Saria thana, around 1km away, and lodged a complaint. Saria Office in-Charge Bindeshwari Das immediately swung into action and rushed to the spot.
"We are scanning CCTV camera footage of the bank and outside to identify the criminals," Das said. He said he had checked the footage of all the CCTV cameras inside the bank premises but could not locate the youth.
Police suspect that the duo had an informer inside the bank who informed about Mandal. "As soon as Mandal stepped out of the bank, the informer told his accomplice who came and snatched the packet," a police source said.
Mandal said he had withdrawn the money for a marriage ceremony of his daughter's at his village in Saria this month.
