More than 50 families of two villages under Sadanandapur panchayat of Basta block are reeling under waterlogging as these villages don’t have adequate drainage.
The villages Baramadhia and Baunsamukha witness the situation each monsoon season but their woes have been compounded due to the incessant rains triggered by the low pressure. The villagers alleged that after heightening of the main road in their village, the lanes lie submerged with rain water not getting released without draining passage.
They alleged that their village drains were narrow and clogged due to which waterlogging is created during rain. While they have to commute by wading through knee deep water , the school going children as well as patients from the villages face harrowing experiences.
The villagers alleged that although they vented their grievances in all forums including the district administration and elected representatives yet all fell in deaf ears .
Meanwhile, although the Subarnarekha and Budhabalanga rivers were much below their danger level (DL), Jalaka was flowing above the DL. According to Irrigation Division sources, the water level of Jalaka river was recorded 6.5 metre against the DL of 5.5 metre at Mathani.
The overflowing of Jalaka caused waterlogging at several pockets of the Basta area.
