The Chief Electoral Officer of Delhi on Monday said that the commission will take action against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate filed nominations for the East Delhi constituency for allegedly having two voter Identity cards (ID), only if it receives any complaint on the matter.
The Aam Aadmi Party's East Delhi candidate Atishi Marlena has recently objected and moved to High Court against the cricketer-turned-politician alleging that he has enrolled twice as a voter in Rajender Nagar and Karol Bagh Assembly segments in violation of the Representation of the People Act.
" The issue came to our knowledge only through the media reports that Gambhir is allegedly register as a voter from two places. However, we did not receive any complaint on the matter from anyone yet. Thus, the action and inquiry in the matter will be only taken after receiving a complaint against the respected candidate," said Ranbir Singh, CEO Delhi.
The Election Commission carries out a routine exercise to detect and delete duplicate entries in the electoral roll before elections. When asked if the authorities failed to detect duplicate entries in Gambhir's case, an official said, "The process of deleting duplicate entries is carried out through a software. The poll panel cannot be blamed if the software fails to detect such anomalies."
Gambhir, however, has rejected the allegation, saying he possesses only one voter identity card. "I have only one voter ID card from Rajender Nagar. I used to live with my maternal grandparents as a child at Ramjas Road (in Karol Bagh), but I never voted from or applied for any voter identity card from there," he had said earlier.
